Cela fait 13 ans qu’est sorti le premier volet de la trilogie du Seigneur des Anneaux en film, sous la direction de Peter Jackson. Si cet univers faisait déjà partie de l’imaginaire collectif de nombre de lecteurs, l’adaptation cinématographique a ouvert la Terre du Milieu au plus grand nombre. Qui aujourd’hui ne connait pas les Hobbits ?
Avec l’adaptation au cinéma du livre qui précéda le Seigneur des Anneaux, Le Hobbit, Peter Jackson relève un nouveau défi et pas des moindres : rendre le terrible dragon Smaug vivant et aussi effrayant que dans le roman.
Grâce aux studios d’effets spéciaux Weta Workshop, voilà qui est fait. On a tremblé devant Smaug le Terrible. On a croisé les doigts une fois qu’il a été englouti dans l’or fondu, priant pour que ce soit sa fin, et cela même lorsqu’on a lu le livre, c’est dire si c’est un exploit !
Mais ce dragon emblématique n’est pas né tout seul : il a fallu lui donner vie. Des crayonnés aux textures finales, tout est expliqué pas à pas. On voit dans les toutes premières idées que Smaug aurait pu avoir une corne.
Chaque étape est expliquée par les créatifs et infographistes qui ont travaillé sur le projet au moment dit. Témoignages et explications se succèdent, tous aussi riches et passionnants les uns que les autres. Il est fascinant de découvrir les dessous de la création de la créature, les idées différentes qui ont mené au Smaug final.
Le livre est très richement illustré. Chaque page comporte plusieurs illustrations, et certaines images sont sur une double page. On n’en finit plus de contempler les détails. Les ailes ont été dessinées de multiples fois, les dents redéfinies et affinées (ou devrait-on dire aiguisées ?) jusqu’à ce que le moindre détail corresponde à l’image qu’on peut s’en faire en lisant le livre, jusqu’à la pointe des griffes.
Au centre du livre, une fresque se déplie pour nous laisser admirer Smaug en détail (et en sécurité !). Sur la fin on verra comment Smaug bouge et interagit avec son environnement grâce à de splendides illustrations d’Erebor, la cité des Nains sous la Montagne Solitaire.
On aime la préface écrite par l’acteur Benedict Cumberbatch, qui explique avec emphase la fusion qu’il a ressentie avec son personnage.
Ce livre sublime fera la joie des plus passionnés d’entre nous et rassasiera la soif de détails des admirateurs de la Bête.

« It’s been 13 years since the first part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy came out as a movie, directed by Peter Jackson. If this universe was already a part of the collective psyche of many readers, the film adaptation has opened Middle Earth to the greatest number. Who hasn’t heard about the Hobbits today ?
With this new film adaptation of the book who came right before the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Peter Jackson takes up a new challenge and not a small one : making Smaug, the terrible dragon, as alive and frightening as he is in the novel. Thanks to the visual effects design studios of Weta Workshop, it’s a success. We have trembled before Smaug the Magnificent. We have crossed our fingers when he was gulped into gold, praying for his end, even if we had read the book, so that’s saying a lot! But this emblematic dragon didn’t come to life by himself.
From sketches to final textures, everything is explained step by step. You can see in the first ideas that Smaug could have got a horn. Every stage is commented by the artists and designers who worked on the project at this particular moment in time. Testimonies and explanations follow one another, all rich and fascinating. It’s thrilling to discover the conception of the creature, the different ideas which led to the final Smaug.
The book is fully illustrated. Every page include several illustrations, and some pictures have a double-page spread. You can’t stop contemplating the details. The wings were drawn multiple times ; the teeth were refined and redefined (or should we say sharpened ?) until that the least little thing matches the image you could have made to yourselves by reading the novels, right up to the tip of the claws. In the center of the book, you unfold a fresco to admire Smaug freely in detail (and in safety)!
At the end you’ll see how Smaug moves and interacts with his environment thanks to some splendid illustrations of Erebor, the city of the Dwarves under the Lonely Mountain. We love the preface written by the actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who tells us emphatically the fusion he felt with his character.
This sublime book will be a delight for the most passionate among us and will satiate the cravings for details of the admirers of the Beast. »
